Kwote~ white labour on a just wage

The Bill ordered the recruitment of the Pacific Islanders to cease after 1903 and gave the federal authorities the power to deport any Islander found in Australia after December 1906. The only Pacific Islanders allowed to stay were those who had arrived in Queensland prior to September 1, 1879, those working in crews on ships and those granted certificates of exemption under the Immigration Restriction Act. The Bill granted compensation to the sugar industry and ordered the introduction of white labour on a just wage Source: Part of the Federation Story

Kwote- pioneering Queensland Economy

"I have seen these men working under various masters and at various employments. No doubt their importance to Queensland mainly attaches to the growth and manufacture of sugar, but they are also engaged on wharves, about the towns, in the meat-preserving establishments, in some instances as shepherds and occasionally as domestic servants…" ~ Description of Queensland visit, 1875 in Anthony Trollope, 'NSW and Queensland',1875. p 169 Source: Part of the Federation Story

Kwote ~ Faith Bandler

"I maintain that it was a form of slavery. It is true that some people in the later years signed a contract to work for three years. But my father didn't, neither did his brother and neither did their sister. They were paid nothing whatsoever." ~ Faith Bandler, interviewed by Paul Kelly for television series '100 Years: The Australian Story' Source: Part of the Federation Story

Kwote ~ KanaKa

The white Australian Blackbirders; euphemism for the Pacific Slave traders referred to the South Pacific Islanders they tricked and kidnapped to Queensland as 'Kanaka'. This was an incorrect term of reference on many levels as 'Kanaka has been defined as a Hawaiian word meaning ‘man'. Source: Part of the Federation Story
